Congolese Refugees Resist Relocation to Kyangwali

Updated: Jul 8, 2018

HOIMA. More than 3,000 Congolese refugees have rejected relocation to Kyangwali refugee settlement area. The refugees are fleeing tribal clashes between the Lendu and the Bagegere in Eastern DRC.

Some of the refugees argue that life in the settlement camp is difficult since they depend on only donated items.

The refugees have now pitched camp at the landing sites of Kaiso, Kyehoro, Mbegu, Sebigoro, Nkondo and Kijangi in the sub-counties of Buseruka, Kyangwali, Kabwoya and Kigorobya in Hoima district along the shores of Lake Albert.

Aruwa Owonda, from Joo Province in Eastern DRC, says he prefers to settle with the host communities so that he can earn a living through fishing.

Geoffrey Komakech, the LCV Councillor for Buseruka Sub County, says that the presence of the refugees in the area has increased pressure on social services like water, sanitary facilities, and Health Centres.

Emmanuel Turyagyenda, the Refugee Desk officer, says that the refugees do not want to be relocated too far because they hope that they will return to their homes once the fighting stops.
