Joy, Excitement Ahead of New Kikuube District Inauguration

KIKUUBE. Residents and local leaders in the newly created Kikuube district are upbeat ahead the district inauguration on Sunday July 1.

Kikuube is one of the 23 new districts approved by Parliament in 2015. It was curved out of Hoima District. The new district is an elevation of Buhaguzi County, one of the four constituencies of Hoima district.

Despite being approved three years ago, the district would not readily start as government chose to operationalize the new districts in a phased manner. Other new districts to start on July 1 include, Nabilatuk, Bugweri, Kasanda, Kwania and Kapelebyong.

In Kikuube, residents and leaders can’t hide their excitement. Since last week, social media has been awash with messages of celebration.

”Am grateful that Kikuube district is in our hands now,” posted one resident Rodgers Ajuna.

Preparations are already underway for what organizers have called the Kikuube District Inaugural party on Sunday.

Kampala Post has also seen a June 25 letter signed by the Buhaguzi County Member of Parliament, Daniel Muheirwe inviting Hoima District Chief Administrative Officer and his technical team to the new district inaugural event.

Muheirwe said the people of Buhaguzi have a reason to celebrate the long awaited district.

“I and the people of Buhaguzi are happy that at last, Kikuube has been allowed to start operations. This means that services have been brought nearer to the local person who has been moving 80kms to reach the Centre for services,” Muheirwe a key architect of the new district said in an interview with Kampala Post on Tuesday.

The Member of Parliament however had a word of caution to the electorate in the new district to guard against tribal politics, urging them to vote capable district leaders.

“Our question is now on the leadership of the district but I urge the voters not to compromise quality by following tribal lines,” he added.

The new district’s creation came amid tribal claims, as those against its creation insisted that the new administrative area would spur tribal tension. The claims were based on the cosmopolitan nature of the area. The new Kikuube district plays host to both indigenous and non-indigenous Banyoro communities.

Inaugural celebrations

Vincent Alpha Opio, the Kabwoya District Councilor, who is also aspiring interim district Chairman says meetings are underway for the district inaugural function, where people will dance, dine and wine as they welcome their district.

The function to be officiated by Bunyoro Affairs Minister Ernest Kiiza will be held at the proposed district headquarters in Kikuube town council.

The new district comprises the Sub counties of Buhimba, Kiziranfumbi, Kabwoya, Bugambe, Kyangwali and Buhimba Town Council. Poor service delivery and limited access to Hoima district headquarters, due to long distance was the major reason advanced for Kikuube district’s creation. Kyangwali which is the furthest Sub County is about 90kilometers away from Hoima town.
